2006: Honiara Riots

Map of Honiara riots - The path towards ethnic, political and economic stability in the Solomon Islands is slow and complex. The AFP, as part of the Participating Police Force attached to the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI), has been assisting with this process since 2003. In 2006, tensions boiled over to create a volatile situation, referred to as the Honiara riots. This map shows the devastation caused by those events. Donated by Janine Ferry. (Cat. No. AFPM2115)

2008:
World Youth Day​

World Youth Day medallion - Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Sydney for World Youth Day in 2008 was one of the largest events ever hosted in Australia, with 223,000 registered pilgrims. The AFP contributed to the close personal protection of dignitaries and overall security of the event. This commemorative medallion was presented to the AFP as a gesture of thanks for its effort and goodwill. Official gift to the AFP. (Cat. No. AFPM2123)

2007: APEC Sydney

Portion of fence from APEC - Many Sydneysiders associate the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting with the five-kilometer fence that was erected in the city’s central business district in 2007. To the AFP, APEC was Australia’s largest-ever security operation. After years of planning, the AFP provided support to the NSW Police at the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, including close personal, dignitary and aviation protection, specialist operations and investigations, community policing and general duties canine teams.
